Scripture Focus: 1 Nofoa’iga Tupu 29:1-9
Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God. Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal: The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord? Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offered willingly, And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

Study:
This passage focuses on King David's preparations for building the temple, a house for God, and the magnificent offerings dedicated for this sacred task. David recognizes that the temple is not for man, but for the Lord, and so he commits his own resources with great generosity. Not merely satisfied with his own contributions, David calls on the leaders and people of Israel to participate willingly. Their responses of giving gold, silver, brass, iron, and precious stones demonstrate their devotion and willingness to honor God. The heart behind the offering is just as important as the offering itself—the people gave willingly and with pure hearts, which brought joy to both God and David. This scripture highlights the spiritual value of generosity, dedication, and collective effort in worship and service to God.
Application:
Today, this passage challenges us to reflect on how we offer ourselves and our resources to God’s work. Like David and the people of Israel, we are called to give willingly and joyfully, recognizing that our offerings are for the Lord and not for human recognition. Our gifts, whether material or in service and talents, should be given from the heart and with pure motives. This teaches us the importance of intentionality in worship and stewardship. Giving generously not only supports God’s kingdom work but also cultivates a spirit of joy and community among believers. We can ask ourselves if our contributions reflect the heart of David—are we offering our best to God, and are we doing so willingly?
Reflection Questions:
- What does giving "with a perfect heart" mean to me personally?
- How can I be more intentional in offering my time, talents, or resources to God’s work?
- Am I willing to contribute to God’s kingdom joyfully and without reluctance?
- In what ways can our community come together to support God’s work collectively?
- How does recognizing that the temple belongs to God (not man) change my perspective on giving?
Prayer:
Lord, help us to give with willing and joyful hearts, just as David and the people of Israel did. Teach us to see our offerings as acts of worship and dedication to You alone. May our gifts, whether great or small, bring glory to Your name and build Your kingdom. Strengthen our faith to give generously, and unite us as a community that honors You with all that we have. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
