Scripture Focus: Ioane 15:18-25
If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me, hates my Father also. If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father. But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’
- John 15:18-25 (WEB)
Study:
Jesus plainly warns his disciples – and us – that the world will hate those who follow him. This isn't a surprising development; Jesus himself experienced this hatred. The reason for this isn’t a failing on our part, but a consequence of being *not of the world*. The world operates on different values and priorities, centered on self and material things. As followers of Christ, we are set apart, called to a higher standard and a different kingdom. This inevitably leads to friction. Jesus emphasizes that persecution is simply a continuation of the treatment he received. He reassures us that if they persecuted Him, they will persecute us. He highlights that their rejection stems from ignorance – they do not truly know God. Ultimately, this opposition fulfills prophecy, demonstrating that God’s plan is unfolding even in the face of hatred.
Application:
In today’s world, opposition to Christianity can take many forms, from subtle cultural disapproval to overt hostility. It is easy to feel discouraged or even afraid when faced with rejection or persecution for our faith. However, this passage reminds us that such opposition is not a sign that we are doing something wrong, but rather a confirmation that we are truly following Jesus. Knowing this helps us to hold firm to our beliefs, even when it's difficult. Remaining faithful to Christ despite opposition is central to being a disciple. We are called to be different, and that difference will inevitably attract attention and, sometimes, negative reaction.
Reflection Questions:
- How does this passage change your perspective on facing challenges to your faith?
- In what ways do you experience opposition to your beliefs in your daily life?
- How can you prepare yourself to respond with grace and truth when facing negativity?
- What does it mean to be “not of the world” in practical terms?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for warning us about the opposition we will face as your followers. Strengthen our resolve to remain faithful, even when it’s difficult. Help us to remember that your love is worth any cost. Give us courage to share your truth with a world that often rejects it. Amen.
