Scripture Focus: Kolose 3:1 - 4
If then you were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
- Colossians 3:1 - 4 (WEB)
Study:
Paul continues to challenge the Colossians (and us!) to live out their new identity in Christ. Having died to our old selves, and having been raised with Christ, we are no longer defined by earthly desires or perspectives. Instead, we are called to actively “seek the things above” - to prioritize spiritual realities over material ones. This isn’t about disconnecting from the world, but about reorienting our hearts and minds towards God. Our ultimate hope and destiny – our “life” – is “hidden with Christ in God,” secure and waiting to be revealed when Christ returns. This promise fuels our present pursuit of a life lived in accordance with our heavenly calling. The scripture emphasizes a major shift in focus. We are no longer consumers of earthly things, but citizens of heaven, living on earth.
Application:
In a world constantly vying for our attention, it’s easy to become fixated on earthly concerns—achievements, possessions, relationships, and even anxieties. This passage reminds us that our true identity and future are not bound to this world. Practically, this means intentionally cultivating a mindset of worship, gratitude, and dependence on God. It means making choices that align with our heavenly calling, resisting the temptation to chase fleeting pleasures, and investing in eternal values. Recognising what we value in life is a good start to realigning our priorities to what is above.
Reflection Questions:
- What are the ‘things above’ that Paul encourages us to seek?
- How does understanding that your “life is hidden with Christ in God” change your perspective on daily challenges and difficulties?
- Identify one area of your life where you tend to prioritize earthly things. How can you intentionally shift your focus towards spiritual realities in that area?
- How does the promise of Christ’s return impact your daily living?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for raising us with Christ and giving us a new life. Help us to fix our eyes on the things that are above, where Christ is. Renew our minds and hearts, that we may live lives that are pleasing to you. Strengthen our hope in your return and empower us to live as citizens of heaven, even while we dwell on earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
