For I desire to have you know how greatly I struggle for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
- Colossians 2:16 – 23 (WEB)

Study:

Paul expresses his deep concern and fervent prayer for the Colossians and others he hasn’t met personally. He’s not just imparting information; he’s battling for their spiritual well-being. The core of his struggle centres on ensuring their firm foundation in Christ. He warns against being deceived by empty philosophies and human traditions (verses 8 & 18). Instead, he emphasizes clinging to the head—Christ (verse 19). This passage highlights the completeness found in Christ: He is the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Through identification with Christ in His death and resurrection (verses 12-15), believers are made complete. The verses detail how formerly alienated and hostile minds are reconciled to God through Christ’s physical body by His death. Living by a set of rules doesn’t achieve this reconciliation; only Christ does.

Application:

It's easy to fall into the trap of seeking fulfillment through external things – rules, achievements, or others' approval. This passage reminds us that true fulfillment and a new identity are found solely in Christ. We are no longer defined by our past failures, societal expectations, or personal shortcomings. By accepting Christ, we die to our old self and are raised to new life with Him. This isn’t a passive acceptance; it's a continual process of choosing to live according to His teachings and relying on His strength. Recognize when you are seeking validation from sources other than Christ and intentionally redirect your focus back to Him.

Reflection Questions:

  • What ‘empty philosophies’ or ‘human traditions’ might be influencing my life today?
  • How can I more intentionally focus on Christ as the ‘head’ in my daily decisions and actions?
  • In what areas of my life am I still clinging to my ‘old self’ instead of embracing the new life offered in Christ?
  • How does recognizing completeness in Christ free me from the pressure to achieve or perform?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the completeness found in Christ. Help me to resist the allure of empty philosophies and human traditions. Grant me the strength to continually rely on You and to live a life worthy of the calling I have received. Help me to embrace my new identity in Christ, leaving behind the burdens of my past. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
