Scripture Focus: Luka 24:50-53

He led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. While he blessed them, he withdrew from them, and was carried up into heaven. They worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Study:

In this passage from Luke, we witness the final moments of Jesus' earthly ministry where He ascends into heaven. Before leaving, Jesus blesses His disciples, handing over the mission to them to continue working for God's kingdom. The ascension signifies Jesus' exaltation and the fulfillment of His redemptive work. The disciples' response is worship and joyful obedience, returning to Jerusalem to praise God continually. This moment marks a transition from Jesus’ physical presence to the coming empowerment by the Holy Spirit as the disciples prepare to spread the Gospel.

Application:

Today, the Ascension reminds us that although Jesus is no longer physically present, His blessing and authority remain with us. We are called to work diligently for God's kingdom, encouraged by the same joy and worship that filled the first disciples. The Ascension invites us to live with a sense of mission, empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses in our daily lives, continually praising God through our actions and faith.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does Jesus’ blessing empower and encourage you in your daily walk?
  • In what ways can you worship God continually like the disciples did after the Ascension?
  • What does working for God’s kingdom look like in your current circumstances?
  • How can you embrace the joy and mission that the disciples experienced after Jesus’ ascension?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for Your ascension that assures us of Your eternal presence and power. Help us to live joyfully and faithfully, working for Your kingdom and praising You in all we do. Empower us through Your Holy Spirit to be bold witnesses of Your love and grace. Amen.
