Scripture Focus: 1 Korinito 10:12-13
Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
- 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (WEB)
Study:
Paul is addressing the Corinthian church, warning them against complacency. He reminds them that even in their perceived strength, they are susceptible to falling into sin. He acknowledges that temptation is a universal human experience – “no temptation has taken you except what is common to man.” However, the core of his message is one of incredible comfort and assurance. God, in His faithfulness, will not allow us to be overwhelmed by temptation. He always provides a way out, an ‘escape route’ that allows us to resist and endure. This isn't a promise of a temptation-free life, but a promise of divine empowerment to navigate those challenges. Considering our series, Pilate stood in a position of immense power, yet succumbed to the pressure of the crowd and handed Jesus over. Even *he* was tempted, and likely felt overwhelmed – yet God's faithfulness extends even to those making terrible choices.
Application:
This verse speaks directly to our everyday struggles. Facing difficult situations, challenging relationships, or internal desires that pull us away from God can feel overwhelming. When we feel cornered, remember this verse. God isn’t surprised by your struggles, and He hasn’t given you more than you can handle. Look for the way of escape – it might be a change in circumstance, a confession to a trusted friend, a deliberate turning towards prayer and scripture, or simply a firm decision to resist. Just as Pilate lacked the courage to resist, we must actively seek God’s strength and guidance to make right choices.
Reflection Questions:
- What temptations are you currently facing?
- Where do you see God’s provision for escape in your current situation?
- Have you ever dismissed a temptation as “too big” to overcome? How does this verse challenge that thought?
- How did Pilate fail to utilize the “escape” available to him?
Prayer:
Dear God, thank you for your faithfulness and your promise to never let me be tempted beyond my ability. Help me to recognize the ways of escape you provide when I face challenges. Give me the strength and courage to resist temptation, and to walk in your ways. Help me learn from the failures of others, like Pilate, so that I may choose wisely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
