Scripture Focus: Mataio 9:35-38

Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into his harvest.”
- Matthew 9:35-38 (WEB)

Study:

This passage reveals Jesus' deep compassion for the people who were dispersed and troubled, lacking guidance and care. While He tirelessly taught, preached, and healed throughout towns and villages, His heart went out to the crowds like a shepherd caring for scattered sheep. Jesus highlights a powerful truth: the harvest—the souls ready to receive God's kingdom—is abundant, but the workers to gather this harvest are few. This calls attention to both the vast opportunity for ministry and the urgent need for dedicated laborers to step forward.

Application:

Today, we live in a world where many are still spiritually lost or burdened, needing the love, truth, and healing found in Jesus Christ. Like Jesus’ time, the harvest is plentiful now too. This passage challenges each believer to see the need around them and to pray for workers, including themselves, to be sent. It encourages us to actively participate in God’s mission—whether through direct ministry, prayer, or support—knowing that God’s compassion leads to abundant possibilities for transformation and growth.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do I respond to the needs around me with compassion like Jesus did?
  • What does it mean for me to be a laborer in God’s harvest field today?
  • In what ways can I pray for more workers to join in sharing God’s love and message?
  • Are there barriers or fears that keep me from participating more fully in God’s work?

Prayer:

Lord, fill my heart with Your compassion that I may see the needs of those around me clearly. Empower me to be a faithful worker in Your harvest, and send more laborers into the fields that are ripe with opportunity. Use me to bring healing, hope, and Your kingdom’s Good News to many. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
