Scripture Focus: Ioane 15:8-11
“In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples. Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love. I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.
- John 15:8-11 (WEB)
Study:
Jesus connects bearing fruit with being His disciples, and glorifies the Father through this fruit. This isn’t simply about quantity, but quality – fruit that demonstrates a transformed life lived in obedience to His commands. Crucially, this fruit isn't produced *by* us in our own strength, but as a result of *remaining* in His love. Like a branch connected to the vine, we draw life and nourishment from Him. The parallel to the Father’s love for Jesus emphasizes the deep, abiding love He has for us. This love isn’t conditional; it’s the foundation for obedience, and the source of true joy – not fleeting happiness, but a deep, enduring peace and fulfillment. Jesus shares these things specifically so that His joy may be *in* us, and our joy may be *complete*.
Application:
In our daily lives, remaining in Jesus’ love isn't a one-time decision, but a continuous choice. It means intentionally prioritizing time with Him – through prayer, scripture reading, and worship – and actively seeking to obey His commands. It requires recognizing our dependence on Him, and relinquishing control. When we allow His love to permeate our thoughts, actions, and relationships, we begin to bear fruit that glorifies God and brings joy to ourselves and others. This looks like patience in hard times, compassion for those around us, and a genuine desire to live a life that reflects His character.
Reflection Questions:
- How would you describe the connection between bearing fruit and remaining in Jesus' love?
- What practical steps can you take today to “remain” in His love?
- In what areas of your life are you struggling to obey Jesus’ commands?
- What does it mean to experience “full” joy in Christ?
- How does understanding the Father’s love for Jesus impact your understanding of His love for you?
Prayer:
Loving Jesus, thank you for your incredible love for me. Help me to remain rooted in you, to draw strength and nourishment from your presence. Forgive me for the times I’ve wandered away, and guide me back into your loving embrace. Fill me with your joy, and empower me to bear fruit that glorifies you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
