Scripture Focus: Kolose 2:1-7

For I desire to have you know how greatly I struggle for you, and for those at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; that their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden. Now this I say that no one may delude you with persuasiveness of speech. For though I am absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, rejoicing and seeing your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving.
- Colossians 2:1-7 (WEB)

Study:

Paul expresses a deep concern and ‘struggle’—not a struggle against something, but *for* the believers in Colosse and Laodicea. This struggle isn't physical, but a fervent desire for their spiritual well-being. He longs for their hearts to be comforted and united in love, experiencing the fullness of understanding God’s mystery revealed in Christ. He anticipates potential false teachings that might sway them, urging them to remain firm in the faith they received. The image of being 'rooted and built up' and 'established' speaks to a process of continued growth and maturity in Christ, strengthened by the teachings they’ve already received and overflowing with gratitude.

Application:

Paul's struggle for these believers highlights the importance of genuine concern for the spiritual growth of others. We, too, should be invested in the well-being of our brothers and sisters in Christ. In a world filled with conflicting ideologies, it’s vital to remain grounded in the truths of Scripture and to walk steadfastly with Jesus. The call to 'walk in him' isn’t a one-time decision but a daily commitment to living out our faith with thankfulness and continually deepening our understanding of God’s will.

Reflection Questions:

  • How does Paul's 'struggle' for the Colossians challenge your own engagement with the spiritual lives of others?
  • What 'riches of full assurance' are you currently seeking in your understanding of God?
  • Are there areas in your life where you feel more like a seedling than a deeply rooted tree?
  • How can you better express thanksgiving in your daily walk with Christ?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and concern for us, expressed through your Word and through the fellowship of believers. Help us to be invested in the spiritual growth of others, and to remain steadfast in our faith, rooted in Christ Jesus. Fill us with a thankful heart and a desire to know you more deeply. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
