Scripture Focus: Ioane 3:17-21
For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”
- John 3:17-21 (WEB)
Study:
This passage powerfully declares God’s intent for Jesus: not to condemn, but to save. The core message is found in verse 17 – God sent Jesus to save the world. This is accomplished through belief. Those who believe are not subject to judgment; the judgment has already fallen on those who reject the Son of God. The passage then delves into the reason for this rejection: a love for darkness because of evil deeds. Those who cling to darkness fear exposure, while those committed to truth embrace the revealing light of God.
Application:
As followers of Christ, we often struggle with guilt and condemnation. This verse offers immense freedom! We are not under condemnation if we are in Christ. Rather than fixating on our shortcomings, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that He offers grace and forgiveness. Furthermore, living a life ‘in the light’ – being honest with ourselves and God about our actions – isn’t about earning favor, but about experiencing the joy and freedom of a life lived in truth. We must actively choose the light and turn away from hidden sin.
Reflection Questions:
- How does understanding God’s intent in sending Jesus (to save, not to condemn) impact your relationship with Him?
- Are there areas in your life where you are loving the darkness, fearing exposure?
- In what ways can you actively ‘come to the light’ this week, embracing honesty and transparency?
- How can you extend this message of ‘no condemnation’ to others?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for sending Jesus to save us, not to condemn us. Forgive us for the times we cling to darkness and fear the light. Help us to live with honesty and integrity, embracing your truth and experiencing the freedom you offer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
