Scripture Focus: Kolose 1:21-23

You, being in past times alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil works, yet now he has reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and without defect and blameless before him, if it is so that you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the Good News which you heard, which is being proclaimed in all creation under heaven; of which I, Paul, was made a servant.
- Colossians 1:21-23 (WEB)

Study:

Paul reminds the Colossians of their former state – alienated from God and hostile in their thoughts and actions. However, through Christ’s death, they have been reconciled to God, presented as holy, blameless, and without defect. This isn’t an automatic process; it’s conditional! The key phrase is “if you continue in the faith.” True faith isn't a one-time event, but a continuous, deliberate choice to remain grounded and steadfast, clinging to the hope offered in the Gospel. Paul emphasizes the universality of this message: it's being proclaimed to all creation. He humbly identifies himself as a servant of this grand purpose.

Application:

We, like the Colossians, were once separated from God. Today, we are offered reconciliation through Jesus Christ. However, maintaining that relationship requires active participation – not simply accepting salvation, but *continuing* in the faith. This means consistently renewing our minds with God’s Word, actively pursuing a relationship with Him through prayer, and refusing to be swayed by the world’s fleeting promises. The gospel isn’t just for us individually; it’s a message meant to be shared, impacting all of creation, and we are called to participate in proclaiming it.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does it mean to be “grounded and steadfast” in your faith?
  • What are some things that threaten to “move you away” from the hope of the Gospel?
  • In what ways can you actively “continue in the faith” today?
  • How does recognizing your past alienation impact your appreciation for God’s reconciliation?
  • What does it mean to you that the gospel message is for “all creation”?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for reconciling us to yourself through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to remain steadfast in our faith, grounded in your Word, and unwavering in our hope. Protect us from the influences that would draw us away from you and empower us to share the good news with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
