Scripture Focus: Kolose 1:24-29
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the assembly; of which I was made a servant, according to the stewardship of God which was given me toward you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden for ages and generations. But now it has been revealed to his saints, to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory; whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus; for which I also labor, striving according to his working, which works in me mightily.
- Colossians 1:24-29 (WEB)
Study:
Paul’s words here aren’t about seeking out suffering, but about finding joy *in* suffering when it’s for the sake of Christ and His church. He talks about ‘filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions’ – this doesn't mean Christ's sacrifice was incomplete, but rather, that we participate in His suffering as we live out His gospel. He views his role as a servant, a steward of God’s revealed mystery: that Christ dwells within believers, offering the hope of glory. This mystery, once hidden, is now openly proclaimed through teaching and admonishment, with the goal of maturity in Christ. Paul’s strength isn’t his own; it’s the mighty working of God within him.
Application:
We often avoid suffering and seek comfort. However, Paul's example challenges us to reframe our perspective. When we face difficulties because of our faith, we can rejoice knowing we are participating in something larger than ourselves. We are called to share the “mystery” of Christ—His presence in us—with the world through our words and actions. Like Paul, we should rely on God’s strength, acknowledging His power working within us to accomplish His purposes.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Paul's attitude towards suffering challenge my own?
- In what ways can I actively participate in “filling up what is lacking” in Christ's afflictions?
- What does it mean to me that Christ dwells within me, offering the hope of glory?
- Am I relying on my own strength, or allowing God to work mightily within me?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for your presence in our lives. Help us to embrace suffering for your sake, finding joy in the midst of it. Reveal your strength within us, and empower us to share the mystery of Christ with a world in need. Help us to live as servants, faithfully fulfilling the purpose you have given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
