Scripture Focus: 1 Samuelu 28:3–20
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.
- 1 Samuel 28:3–20 (KJV)
Study:
The story of the Witch of Endor reveals a dark and desperate moment in King Saul's reign. Despite previously outlawing witchcraft in Israel, Saul seeks out a medium to bring up the spirit of the prophet Samuel for guidance. His actions show his fear and loss of trust in God, turning instead to forbidden practices. The narrative highlights the dangers of relying on occult practices rather than God’s word, and the tragic consequences that follow. Samuel's spirit reproves Saul, confirming his impending defeat and death, which leads to a sobering end for Israel's first king.
Application:
Today, this passage reminds us to place our trust fully in God rather than seeking solutions through questionable or forbidden means when we feel desperate or uncertain. When faced with fear or confusion, we must turn to prayer, scripture, and godly counsel rather than turning away from God’s guidance. This story also encourages us to be vigilant about where we seek answers and reminds us that God desires our trust and obedience above all else.
Reflection Questions:
- In what ways do I sometimes try to find answers outside of God’s guidance?
- How can I deepen my trust in God especially in times of fear and uncertainty?
- What can I learn from Saul’s mistakes about obedience and faithfulness?
- How can I encourage others to seek God rather than worldly or forbidden sources for direction?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to always seek You first in every situation. Strengthen my faith so that I will trust in Your timing and guidance, even when the way is unclear. Protect me from temptation to turn aside from Your truth and lead me in paths of righteousness. Amen.
