Scripture Focus: 1 Tupu 5:1-12

Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David. Solomon sent to Hiram, saying, “You know how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Yahweh his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Yahweh put them under the soles of his feet. But now Yahweh my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence. Behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Yahweh my God, as Yahweh spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for my name.’ Now therefore command that they cut me cedar trees out of Lebanon. My servants shall be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you shall say. For you know that there is not among us any who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.” When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly, and said, “Blessed is Yahweh this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.” Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, “I have heard the message which you have sent to me. I will do all your desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir. My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place that you shall appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and you shall receive them. You shall accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.” So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire. Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year. Yahweh gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a treaty together.

Study:

This passage details the beginning of Solomon’s great building project – the Temple. It demonstrates a fruitful partnership built on mutual respect and benefit. Hiram, King of Tyre, willingly provides skilled laborers and materials (cedar and fir trees) to Solomon, recognizing Solomon’s divine appointment and wisdom. Crucially, the text highlights that Solomon was able to undertake this project because God had granted him rest from war. The core promise here is that when we seek God’s will and He blesses our endeavors, He opens doors for collaboration and provides the resources needed for success. The treaty established between Solomon and Hiram signifies a peaceful and mutually beneficial agreement, fostered by God’s provision and Solomon’s wisdom.

Application:

Today, we can see parallels in our own lives. When we pursue God’s purposes, He often provides the right people and resources at the right time. This isn’t a guarantee of effortless success, but an assurance that God will equip us for the tasks He calls us to. It’s a reminder to seek wisdom in our planning and to be open to partnerships that align with God’s will. The exchange of resources—timber for wheat and oil—also highlights the importance of reciprocity and honoring commitments in our relationships. Like Solomon, we must be careful to acknowledge God as the ultimate source of our success and to be grateful for the blessings He provides.

Reflection Questions:

  • What “building projects” (spiritual, professional, personal) are you currently undertaking?
  • How can you recognize and acknowledge God’s provision in these endeavors?
  • Are there potential partnerships you should explore that could help you achieve God's will?
  • How can you demonstrate reciprocity and faithfulness in your relationships?
  • What does 'rest' look like in your life, and how can you seek it so that you can pursue God's purposes?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for your promise to provide for our needs and to grant us wisdom. Help us to discern your will and to recognize the resources you provide. Open our eyes to potential partnerships and empower us to build relationships based on mutual respect and reciprocity. Grant us peace and rest, so that we may faithfully pursue your purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
